African leaders have asked for more investment in disaster risk reduction measures in order to reduce calamities.
According to Guleid, the Director of IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC) there is a need for appropriate and innovative ways to disaster reduction, such as cooperation, risk assessments, risk governance mechanisms, and increased funding in drr activities such as multi-hazards and early warning alerts.
The appeal comes just two weeks after IGAD launched a centralized monitoring and early warning system in Nairobi, Kenya, The centre will provide a timely regional early warning as well as any disaster concerns such as drought, floods, and migratory pests, among others.
He was addressing during the opening ceremony of the Eighth Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Seventh High-Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction.
