Our unique perspective

A DIRAJ story is distinct from a general news story. We tell the story, but also how the story is being told, who is telling it, and the challenges those journalists experience. We offer a peek into the lives of journalists reporting on disasters from a disaster risk reduction (DRR) perspective. We provide insight into the challenges journalists in Africa face, as well as resources and opportunities that will hopefully support journalists to improve their reporting skills and expand their reach.

Our values

Solutions. Our stories put an emphasis on solutions – the positive measures that will help build more resilient communities and save more lives in the future.

Sources. We champion the voices of those most affected by disasters. In addition, we cite accurate data provided by the best international, regional and national experts.

Context. We situate disasters in the context of why they happened, what can be done to prevent them from happening again, and how they are interconnected with broader global issues such as the climate crisis.

Journalists. We cite their reporting. We interview them. We consider their experiences. We share their knowledge. We are journalists ourselves and we stand united with the journalist community.

Education. Self-growth should be a life-long endeavour. We offer a number of training tools and seminars to help reporters better report on prevention and resilience.
