This will lead to increased demand for vehicles, factories and other pollutants. The need to improve air quality in cities is urgent.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nature_org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Nature Conservancy<\/a> in a report titled <a href=\"https:\/\/thought-leadership-production.s3.amazonaws.com\/2016\/10\/28\/17\/17\/50\/0615788b-8eaf-4b4f-a02a-8819c68278ef\/20160825_PHA_Report_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planting Healthy Air<\/a>, explains that the most damaging air pollutant in most cities is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenfacts.org\/en\/particulate-matter-pm\/level-2\/01-presentation.htm#:~:text=Particulate%20matter%20is%20the%20sum,%2C%20smoke%2C%20and%20liquid%20droplets.&amp;text=directly%20emitted%2C%20for%20instance%20when,is%20carried%20by%20wind%2C%20or\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particulate matter<\/a>, which is deeply inhaled into the lungs leading to an estimated three million deaths annually.\u00a0<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particulate matter is microscopic particles that become trapped in the lungs of people breathing polluted air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">A green recovery&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><p>As authorities look for solutions for safer and more liveable cities, journalist and chief of partnerships at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CIFOR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for International Forestry Research<\/a> (CIFOR)\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/icraf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Agroforestry<\/a> (ICRAF), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CWatsonICRAF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cathy Watson<\/a>, suggests tree planting is a simple, cost-effective solution.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrees are probably the best public health intervention that you can do for any city because they allow people to just be out there and relax, mitigate disasters, reduce temperatures and also baffling city noise,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>COVID-19 restrictions led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/05\/200511124444.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a temporary reduction in pollution levels<\/a> globally. Different stakeholders have as a result called for governments to make recovery from the pandemic as sustainable and resilient as possible. As part of this trend, Cathy says it is encouraging to note that the whole world now realizes the importance of trees and efforts to plant them in large numbers have been stepped up.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>In her recent <a href=\"https:\/\/news.trust.org\/item\/20200824124618-bpc0a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRF_Stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thompson Reuters Foundation news<\/a>, Cathy reported how COVID-19 had triggered a positive change in Kenya. During lockdown, she wrote, the government almost doubled usable green space in the capital, Nairobi, created hundreds of green jobs, invited the public to plant roundabouts, and called for \u201coptimal urban forest cover\u201d in its draft Forestry Act.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban green space includes street trees, schoolyards, roadside vegetation, parks, playgrounds, green corridors and urban woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Trees tell the inequality story&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/338074\/full-report-for-archiving.pdf?ua=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health and social benefits<\/a> of green space in cities are proven, including heightened immune function and less respiratory disease, tree cover in many African cities is not only wanting but also reveals inequality, highlighting the margins between the rich and the poor.\u00a0<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRicher urban communities are greener with lots of trees around, yet poor neighbourhoods do not have such privileges and this also has an impact on the health of people in these places,\u201d Cathy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>The World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/338074\/full-report-for-archiving.pdf?ua=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommends<\/a> that urban green spaces be planned and designed with the local communities and the intended users. This ensures that all green space interventions serve the needs of the communities \u2013 especially in deprived areas.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>At a time when many African cities <a href=\"http:\/\/floodlist.com\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are flooded<\/a>, trees can help reduce runoff water and subsequently prevent or reduce flooding while also reducing the risk of landslides.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith better forest and trees in the landscapes, groundwater is well maintained and also we have much more stable river flows,\u201d explained Cathy, adding that trees bind and anchor soil, holding the soil&rsquo;s profile and keeping the trees in place, therefore enabling water to sink into the ground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p>\u00a0Even as governments and stakeholders seek ways to maintain the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/05\/200511124444.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental boon<\/a>\u00a0that COVID-19 lockdowns have provided, Cathy believes journalists too have a role to play in creating a greener, cleaner world.\u00a0<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo not just be an antagonist journalist, be a supportive one too, get copies of your forest act, your agriculture act and get to understand the policies so you help the government in pushing for realization of the same,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In cities around the world, air pollution is a major problem. 55% of the global population already live in urban areas, a proportion that is projected to rise to 68% by 2050.
