Study finds refugee businesses play vital role in local economy: The study looks at Kakuma from the perspective of setting up a private business. It finds that there are more than 2,000 businesses and small shops in Kakuma, and the area’s economy is worth 6 billion shillings (US$56 million). According to the study, half of household income is spent on consumer products, a market worth more than US $26 million per year. Enhanced access to loans and credit for refugee and host business community: Recruitment of new members is ongoing for the newly registered Turkana West Integrated Savings and Credit Co-operative society (TWISACCO). During the reporting period, the SACCO conducted its first AGM where election of leaders took place under the supervision of the Turkana County Director of Co-operatives. The SACCO expected to start disbursement of loans to members after a 6-month period of saving.
Cholera outbreak monitoring and response: 1 case of cholera has been confirmed from a host community village in Kakuma. UNHCR, close collaboration with the Government of Kenya and health partners have taken measures to mitigate the risk of an outbreak. An action plan has been developed and the situation is being monitored.
